Role of the Committee

 Heart of the Village is registered as a Community Benefit Society under the name of Heart of the Village (Stoke St Gregory) Ltd with company registration number RS008065. You can find full registration details on the find a charity website which has links to our records on the Financial Conduct Authority and Companies House.

The management committee of a community benefit society is responsible for overseeing the society’s governance, ensuring it fulfils its community-oriented mission, complies with legal obligations, and manages resources effectively. In simple words it means that the management committee looks after Heart of the Village on behalf of its members.

Committee members should bring a mix of skills—finance, legal, community engagement, etc.—and act collectively to make decisions.

Hello, I am Alfred, born in the Netherlands in 1962,  permanent resident of Stoke St Gregory since 2003. I am currently national operations manager for Mouldex in Chedzoy, responsible for a team of approx. 75 staff. Previously, for over 20 years, I have been Operations Manager and Managing Director of a 70 staff strong wholesale & ecommerce fulfilment company in Bridgwater.


You might know me from my involvement in Stoke St Gregory in;

  - setting up and maintaining the previous parish council website

  - organising and being PA at Stoke Stampede since 2009

  - setting up and moderating the first SSG Facebook page

  - FLAG member, managing volunteers & coordination with council/services during 2014 floods

  - member of 2023 village plan steering committee

  - Royal Oak karaoke parties and Covid 'Polkesfield music sessions'


What you might not be aware of is my 15 years experience in the Netherlands in all aspects of volunteering in a 1000 member strong multi sports & social club, including being a member of and running various committees and chairing the club through a crisis period.


Although not a frequent user of the café/pub/shop myself and initially being sceptical about HOTV becoming a reality, I  am grateful to the founders of HOTV as I do believe that it now plays a vital role in village life and will require the full attention of a positive minded management committee to ensure it continues to do so. I think I can create enhanced engagement with members and non members alike and be a voice of reason within the committee, which is why I was keen on taking on the role as vice chair.

Responsibilities of the Management Committe

Following are key tasks and responsibilities for the HOTV Management Committee

Strategic Leadership & Governance

- Set the society’s vision, mission, and strategic direction in line with its community benefit purpose.
- Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and the society’s own rules (as registered with the FCA).
- Monitor performance against objectives and ensure accountability to members and stakeholders.

Operational Oversight

- Appoint and supervise senior staff or volunteers, where applicable.
- Approve budgets and financial plans, ensuring the society remains solvent and financially responsible.
- Oversee risk management, including safeguarding assets and ensuring appropriate insurance and policies are in place.

Legal and Fiduciary Duties

- Act in the best interests of the society and its community, not for personal gain.
- Avoid conflicts of interest and declare any potential conflicts.
- Ensure accurate record-keeping, including minutes, financial reports, and member communications

Practical Responsibilities

Community Engagement

- Maintain governance documents, such as policies, procedures, and the society’s rulebook.
- Support new committee members through induction and training.
- Review and update governance practices regularly to reflect best practice and evolving needs.
