The management committee of a community benefit society is responsible for overseeing the society’s governance, ensuring it fulfils its community-oriented mission, complies with legal obligations, and manages resources effectively. In simple words it means that the management committee looks after Heart of the Village on behalf of its members.

Committee members should bring a mix of skills—finance, legal, community engagement, etc.—and act collectively to make decisions.

Responsibilities of the Management Committe

Following are key tasks and responsibilities for the HOTV Management Committee

Strategic Leadership & Governance

- Set the society’s vision, mission, and strategic direction in line with its community benefit purpose.
- Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and the society’s own rules (as registered with the FCA).
- Monitor performance against objectives and ensure accountability to members and stakeholders.

Operational Oversight

- Appoint and supervise senior staff or volunteers, where applicable.
- Approve budgets and financial plans, ensuring the society remains solvent and financially responsible.
- Oversee risk management, including safeguarding assets and ensuring appropriate insurance and policies are in place.

Legal and Fiduciary Duties

- Act in the best interests of the society and its community, not for personal gain.
- Avoid conflicts of interest and declare any potential conflicts.
- Ensure accurate record-keeping, including minutes, financial reports, and member communications

Practical Responsibilities

Community Engagement

- Maintain governance documents, such as policies, procedures, and the society’s rulebook.
- Support new committee members through induction and training.
- Review and update governance practices regularly to reflect best practice and evolving needs.
